For those of you who don’t know me outside of the Land O’Blogs, here is a little insight into my life:

I cannot pronounce big words to save my life.

I know lots of big words. If I see them on paper, I know what they mean. But when I go to use them in conversation… I choke. Because I have no idea how to pronounce them. I don’t think it is possible to sound more foolish than when you are trying to be bombastic, and mispronounce all of the “inflated language” in the process. Am I right? So all of these big, wondrous words (that I am continuing to learn for the GRE) go to waste because I sound like an idiot when I try to use them.

But there is more to this problem of mine. I cannot pronounce Spanish words either, which is a huge fricken problem when you live in a town that was settled by Spaniards! Every name of every street in Santa Barbara is Spanish. Pedregosa, Micheltorena, Figueroa, Gutierrez… to name a few. When I am downtown and a friend calls me and asks where I am, giving directions is a nightmare. “I’m near the corner of State St and Fig-or-e-ure,” I’ll say. They have no idea what I am talking about.

The other day we were discussing this problem of mine on the way home from the Jack Johnson concert. The number one hardest Santa Barbara street for me to pronounce is Arrellaga. (I speak Italian so I try to pronounce all Spanish words as if they were Italian and it doesn’t work that way.) I have a friend who lives on that street and I was giving her a ride home and said, “What street do you live on again? Ar-el-ah-le-ga-la?” Everyone laughed hysterically at my expense.

Then, my dear friend Angie, chimed in and said… “That sounds like something an octopus would say!”

Ummmmmmmmm….. what?

ANYWAY…… please forgive me if, in future posts, I use a lot of “big” words. I will probably use them here for two reasons. 1.) To practice using them in context so that I score high on the GRE and eventually take over the world with my verbal skills, and 2.) Because when they are written, you guys can’t hear me trying to pronounce them and laugh at me. Instead, you are trying to pronounce them in your own head… perhaps incorrectly, thus making you feel like an idiot. And making me seem really smart. Or something like that.

Just go with it, okay?

(And please forgive me for this post too because you all probably think I’m the biggest tart after reading it.)

It has arrived. It came quickly, as usual, but with much less anticipation than previous years. But here it is, upon us… the end of summer.

Call me a nerd (seriously… I dare you) but I always liked going back to school at the end of the summer. There are many reasons for this. A.) I’m very social. School is a very social place. I loved seeing my friends everyday. B.) Three months of summer was enough for me. I love summer, sure, but I get bored. I thrive from being busy. C.) I genuinely like to learn. D.) New clothes!

This is the first back to school season of my life that I am not going back to school. (Well, last year actually was the first, but I was still enrolled in a class for my internship… and my internship was kind of like school… except I got paid.) Either way, this is the first time in my life (since I was 5 anyway) that the end of summer has come, but nothing in my life is changing. It is weird. And the fact that I am in Santa Barbara and it is summer year around makes it even more weird. I’m used to the weather getting chillier in September… changing leaves… hoodies…. football games. But nope, not here. It is still 75 degrees and sunny. Every. Single. Freaking. Day.

I’m not complaining. Honestly, I’m not. I’m just trying to express how weird it seems to me.

Lets rewind back to the part where I said that I like to learn. I miss learning. Not that I’m not learning anything from everyday life. But going to classes, listening to lectures, understanding homework… you hate it when you have to do it, but miss it when you don’t. Or at least I do. In order to make up for this lack of learning, I am trying to study for the GRE as much as possible. It is working. I am learning a lot. I just have one big issue. One stupid, behemoth issue that makes it that much more complicated to study.

I am completely and utterly addicted to the Internet.

There I said it. It’s officially out in the open. Most of you are bloggers, so I’m sure you understand to an extent. But it is almost as if I am absorbing some weird, addictive, brain-numbing substance through my fingertips… or maybe from the airwaves coming directly from my wireless router. I don’t know exactly what it is. Except it’s like nicotine. Maybe stronger. I crave it all day. And when I am online, I am completely incapable of getting anything else done. I honestly cannot be in the same room with my computer if I want to accomplish something. I am online like it is my job. (And it’s not.) It’s the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I do before I go to bed.

So back to the studying thing. If I want to get any studying done, I absolutely must leave the house. I have been going to Starbucks, Borders, the park… anywhere that is not near my computer. And once I am there, I can finally concentrate and actually study. It is the same with reading. I cannot read at home. This is probably why I have been reading the same book for 9 months. (I am really really really ashamed to admit that.) Honestly, I can hardly watch TV in the presence of my computer… unless I am watching online episodes, which is pretty much the only TV I watch these days.

Wow. I need to just stop. I wish it was April 1st so that I could end this post by saying, “April Fools! Just kidding about all of that. I’m really not that pathetic.” But it’s not. It’s August 27th. And I am going to a Jack Johnson concert tonight. Far, far away from my computer. And I bet it will be 75 degrees and sunny.

Over the weekend I went to Fresno for my little cousin’s birthday party. Since I was born and raised in the midwest, I never before had the opportunity to easily spend a weekend with my California family so I really love that I can do that now. My cousin turned 14 on Friday and she had a water party/sleepover with about 8 of her friends. My aunt, bless her heart, made enough food for the entire population of Fresno. This is pretty typical of her so I wasn’t all too suprised, but she almost reached a new level this time. When I walked in the house the dining room table was completely covered in food… salad, chocolate fondue, fruit bowls, veggie tray, pasta salad, corn, bakes beans, brownies, cookies, chips, mashed potatoes… then came the grilled burgers, steak, and pork… I was amazed at how much food there was. All this for 14 year old girls? Do 14 year old girls even eat? Apparently so. But then, the best thing of all happened. My youngest cousin ran into the kitchen and yelled, “Make room for the turkey!” The turkey?! My aunt baked a 10 lb turkey for the birthday party. I couldn’t stop giggling every time I looked over at the huge turkey sitting on the table amidst all the other dishes–completely untouched. My uncle saw me laughing and shook his head. “That’s my lunch for the next month.”

exorbitant / adj/ exceeding customary or normal limits, especially in quantity or price

In a sentence… The amount of food that my aunt prepared for the birthday party was exorbitant.

Honestly. Lifetime movies are the most ridiculous, dramatic, cliche films ever made… but beware because they are sooo addictive. Many a times have I flipped through stations, only to get sucked into a Lifetime movie about pregnant teenagers, online sex predators, crazy love affairs, kidnappings, or STDs in high school. It starts out with watching the last 45 minutes of She’s Too Young (my favorite one) because there’s nothing better on. But then you see a preview for Fifteen and Pregnant, which is coming up next, and you watch that one too. Before you know it, you’ve wasted away your entire Sunday afternoon in front of the TV because you can’t get enough of the drama drug. It is not a very well-known drug, but it’s dangerously addictive and causes brain damage when taken in large doses. Side affects may also include laziness, overeating, lack of motivation, and blurred vision from staring at the TV for too long.

Guys just don’t get it, but every woman with cable knows what I’m talking about.

salubrious / adj / favorable to or promoting health or well-being

In a sentence… Watching Lifetime movies all day is not a salubrious habit.

So I decided to contrive a list of the ten coolest, most awesome things I have ever done. There is a story behind each and every one of these things that I will eventually write about in the future, so you must continue to read my blog in order to find out more.

Scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef (Cairns, Australia)

Get a free trip to Italy courteously of Tony Danza (Rome)

Dance in the opening ceremony of Carnivale in Venice (picked from a crowd of 10,000)

Cliff diving in Australia (Crystal Cascades… scariest thing ever)

Be front row and center at a Jack Johnson concert (Milan, Italy)

Go to the final Olympic bobsledding event up in the Alps (Torino, Italy)

Watch the sunrise over the Mediterranean with a sexy British boy (Barcelona, Spain)

Be an APC for the Top Chef Live Finale Chicago (APC = Assistant Production Coordinator)

Be up in the Eiffel Tower during the light show at night (Paris… duh)

Watch my parents fight away a monkey that came inside our hotel room in India (in the jungle)

So that is that. Notice most of those things took place in other countries… that is exactly why I like to travel so much. Life is most exciting when you are doing something crazy in a foreign country. Speaking of traveling, my friend Nikki and I want to go do a work exchange in Sydney, Australia next year. We were thinking of going over there in January or early February and working somewhere for 4 months or so… we’d hopefully find a house sitting situation to avoid paying rent. And then we’d use all the money we earned working to go travel Southeast Asia for a month or so before coming home. Since we started toying with this idea in February, I’ve been saving for it. I won’t do it if I have to put even a dime of it on a credit card because I have no desire to start grad school in credit card debt. Starting grad school broke (which I probably will be if I go through with this whole trip) is already gonna suck enough. As soon as I get my travelogue section up, I’m going to put more details about it as well as some sort of rough itinerary.

Also, since I have to apply for grad schools this fall, I am currently working on memorizing as many GRE vocab words as possible. In order to do this, I thought it might be a fun idea to incorporate them into my blog to make all of you (all 5 of you who actually read this) feel a bit smarter as well. So, the word for today is…

diatribe /n/ a forceful and bitter verbal attack against someone or something

In a sentence… There have recently been several diatribes against Hilary Clinton regarding her position on the war in Iraq and other political viewpoints.

Sorry, that was a lame sentence. I’ll get better at this, I swear.
